Berlin Christmas Markets

A few of them, anyway

Berlin, being the capital of Germany, has a lot of Christmas markets to choose from. They are basically at every major interchange in the city. I only really took the effort to visit two of them, however, and they are really much closer to what I have always expected a Christmas market to be. The only downside, is that most of the wares are mass-produced and not really all that special. But the decorations are lovely!

Judge for yourself from this array of photos I took around Alexanderplatz and Spandau.

Helpful holiday German:

Merry Christmas! - Fröhliche Weihnachten!

Happy New Year! - Frohes neues Jahr!

Christmas market - Weihnachtsmarkt

Chestnut - Maroni

Mulled wine - Glühwein

How much does this cost? - Wie viele das kostet?

Please - Bitte

Thank you - Danke

Cup - Pfand

You'll see "Pfand" written in places where you can buy Glühwein and Kinderpunsch (non-alcoholic). It means that you can keep the amazing 0,2l mug they give you with your drink. If you return it, you will get a refund of like 2 euros. But why would you ever do that?

Here's my mother displaying hers from Cologne:
