Dostoyevsky

2016-06 / Saint Petersburg, Russia

The Alexander Nevsky Lavra Necropolis in Saint-Petersburg is mostly famous for the famous people who are buried there. One of whom is Fyodor Dostoyevsky. This man is the soul of Saint-Petersburg as far as many Russians (including my husband) are concerned. My best friend tried to get me to read Crime and Punishment when we were still in high school. She said it was one of the greatest novels ever written and something that would be right up my alley in its philosophy. She even lent me her own copy of the book to help me along. For 10 years, I held on to that book. I carried it with me through four different moves and eventually left it when I moved out of the country. I never read that book. It's in my mother's house now. However, I did read the novel (in digital form) during my time in Saint-Petersburg. It seemed like the right time to do it.My conclusion: Russia's soul is a very sad and guilty one. But beautiful nonetheless.
